Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of enrolling in a green offer?

Purchasing renewable energy or renewable energy certificates to match your electricity usage through FirstEnergy Solutions helps stimulate clean, renewable resources and reduces your environmental impact. Together, we can help protect the environment, building a sustainable future for everyone.

If I enroll in a green offer, will I receive only green energy?

Renewable energy generators are connected to the electric grid in the same manner as conventional electricity generators. When electricity from renewable sources enters the grid, it mixes with electricity from conventional sources. When you enroll in a 100% wind offer, FirstEnergy Solutions will purchase and “retire” enough Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to match your usage for the year, which ensures that electricity from renewable resources is generated and added to the power grid, displacing power that would have been produced from conventional sources.

What is a Renewable Energy Certificate?

Think of renewable energy as having two parts: the actual electricity and the “green” attributes. For every megawatt-hour of electricity that an energy renewable generator produces, one REC is also created. This REC represents the positive, “green” attributes of renewable energy generation.

When we retire the number of RECs equal to your electricity usage, you are essentially supporting renewable electricity generators and reducing the need for fossil fuel-based generation sources to meet consumer demand.

This offer is Green-e® Energy Certified – what does that mean?

Green-e Energy is the nation's leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions in the retail market. Green-e Energy Certified lets you know that the green energy product you are purchasing has been verified by an independent third-party.

How are RECs tracked?

Third-party regional tracking systems monitor compliance, separate each megawatt-hour from its green component, and record those attributes as RECs. Each REC is given a unique serial number, and once sold, is retired from the tracking system. Regional tracking systems are essential for REC trading because they verify the creation and transfer of RECs.

How do RECs support renewable electric generation?

Your purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) supports renewable electricity production in the region of generation. For every unit of renewable electricity generated, an equivalent amount of RECs is produced, and by purchasing and pairing RECs with your electricity service you are using and receiving the benefits of that renewable electricity. Your REC purchase also helps build a market for renewable electricity. Increased demand for and generation of renewable electricity helps reduce conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable electricity generator is located. It also has other local and global environmental benefits which may include emitting little or no regional air pollution or carbon dioxide.

The RECs in AllGreen are verified and certified by Green-e Energy, and FirstEnergy Solutions is required to disclose the quantity, type and geographic source of each certificate. Please see the Product Content Label for this information. Green-e Energy also verifies that the renewable certificates are not sold more than once or claimed by more than one party.
