Choosing a Product That’s Right for You
We continue to pursue new sources of clean, renewable energy and other opportunities to meet customers’ needs in an environmentally sound manner. In fact, we’re one of our region’s largest providers of renewable energy, with approximately 1,900 MW of hydro and contracted wind and solar resources.
Our green products are an extension of our commitment to protecting the environment while providing customers with a reliable and affordable energy supply. We’re here to help you develop a well-planned green program that can benefit both the environment and your business.
National Wind: This is a renewable energy certificate (REC) product from national wind sources that meet the Center for Resource Solutions’ strict source guidelines for a Green-e® certified product. This product is ideal for any customer seeking independent, third-party verification of their renewable energy purchases, especially if pursuing certification from organizations such as LEED.
Local Wind: With a portfolio of nearly 500 MW of wind generation under contract in Illinois, Pennsylvania and Ohio, we are one of the largest providers of wind energy in the region. Local Wind is a REC product generated from in-state wind farms contracted to FirstEnergy Solutions, which makes it ideal for customers who wish to support the development of green technology in their region.
Customized Green: Our ownership of the output of a number of renewable energy facilities in the region allows us to structure unique renewable products – such as solar or wind power directly from our renewable facilities – to meet our customers’ individual budgetary needs and sustainability objectives.

About Renewable Energy Credits (RECs)
FirstEnergy Solutions customers can acquire all or a percentage of their load through the purchase of RECs. A REC represents the environmental benefits of renewable energy generation. They provide consumers and suppliers a way to support renewable energy technologies without purchasing the actual electric generation.
Think of renewable energy as having two parts; the electricity and the “green” attributes. RECs represent the “green” attributes of renewable energy. A single REC is equal to one megawatt-hour (MWh), or 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electric generation.
Third-party regional tracking systems monitor compliance, separate each megawatt-hour from its green component, and record those attributes as RECs. Each REC is given a unique serial number, and once sold, is retired from the tracking system. Regional tracking systems are essential for REC trading because they verify the creation and transfer of RECs.
